Management of Human Resources

Our Human Resources

Verref has a group human resources manager, with specialist human resources and training personnel to handle the day-to-day management of employee-related issues. This manager reports to the Chief Operating Officer who has overall responsibility for human resources, industrial relations, remuneration and labour practices across the group.

At operational level, employee forums, which meet every month, give unions the opportunity to engage with management on different issues. We also have quarterly presentations to all employees on safety and business performance matters where employees are engaged by asking questions or giving ideas for continuous improvement.

In line with the requirements of South Africa's Mineral and Petroleum Resources and Development Act (MPRDA) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry (the Mining Charter), priority is given to the attraction, retention and development of historically disadvantaged South Africans (HDSAs) and women at our mining operations.

Verref ensures that any contractors who undertake work for the company are compliant with legislation.

One of the challenges that Verref faces, along with many other manufacturing and mining companies in South Africa, is that of an ageing workforce. In a strategic approach to human resources, Verref is leveraging the experience of older staff members to transfer skills to younger employees and is encouraging all members of the workforce to develop a mindset that is open to learning and innovation, regardless of age.
